North East Brazil
Brazil with its lively, fun-loving people, wonderful white sandy beaches, rain forest and vibrant cities and towns, will quite simply stir your deepest emotions and take your breath away! Following three centuries under the rule of Portugal, Brazil became an independent nation in 1822 and a republic in 1889.
By far the largest and most populous country in South America, Brazil overcame more than half a century of military intervention in the governance of the country when in 1985 the military regime peacefully ceded power to civilian rulers. Brazil continues to pursue industrial and agricultural growth and development of its interior. Capitalising on its vast natural resources and a large labour pool, it is today South America’s leading economic power and a regional leader.
The northeast of Brazil is the main ‘sun and beach’ destination in the country and is also the area that is the receiving most of the investments and attention on an international level. Main reasons are the near perfect climate and the numerous semi-virgin beaches along its beautiful coastline. The most important cities in northeast Brazil are Natal, Fortaleza, Recife and Salvador.
The weather in the northeast is the best in the entire country, with a yearly average temperature of 27 degrees and is stable and sunny virtually all year round. In addition, the northeast is the closest point to Europe from Latin America and flying time is approximately 7 hours.
Further, compared to many tropical destinations, Brazil benefits from a complete lack of natural phenomena such as hurricanes and tropical storms, nor is it affected by earthquakes. Major tour operators are fast adding Brazil to their offers as Brazil is becoming one of the most promising emerging markets. International groups are now investing billions in new hotels and resorts in the northeast and the internationally well known resort, Club Med, has three resorts located there.
About Fortaleza
The name Fortaleza means fortress. The first building erected in what is now called Fortaleza was the Fortress Schoonenborch,
built in 1649 by the Dutch, who at the time had invaded and were occupying cities in the Brazilian Northeast, such as Recife and
Natal. After the Dutch were expelled, the city changed its name a few times, finally opting to settle for the name “Fortaleza”.
With over 2 million residents, Fortaleza is a large city with a very fun-loving convivial atmosphere. It is also the capital of the Ceara state and is sometime called Ceará. Two words define the capital of Ceara State; fun and party.
Fortaleza is the Brazilian coastal city with the most sunny days throughout the year. Party is the permanent state of spirit of the people and the city. Wealthy Brazilians flock to the northeast and Fortaleza for their holidays and what attracts them and foreigners alike is a combination of sunny beaches, a busy and safe nightlife and the abundance of delicious foods on offer.
